Get ready for intricate gowns, messy relationships, and arranged marriages in 19th-century London!
Even though the series won’t premier until next month, today we got the official first trailer for The Buccaneers, and if you were frustrated by how little screen time the queer storyline got in season one, it looks like your prayers may have been answered for the upcoming season.
While season one of the Apple TV+ period piece set in the Gilded Age and based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel, was about young American heiresses taking the London debutant season by storm in the search of husbands, season two will find our favorite characters navigating new marriages, titles, births, and deaths.
The show’s strong suit is, of course, the fun and often chaotic drama that makes it so bingeable, but the heart of the series is female friendships and the brand new trailer makes it clear that while these women are frequently being controlled by the patriarchal system of 1870s England and the powerful men in their lives, they are fiercely loyal and protective of each other.

This, combined with the show's modern sensibilities and themes — think Bridgerton — makes it so appealing and a must-watch for those who love complicated female characters.
And if you love WLW content, then you are also in luck. It may still be unclear what exactly will happen in the eight-episode second season, but the two-minute trailer features two sapphic kisses. Plus, Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!" plays in the trailer, which can only be a good sign for how gay the upcoming season is going to be!
The first season gave us a taste of a queer plot line, but in season two we’re hoping for much more. Last season, we met Mabel Elmsworth, played by trans actress Josie Totah, who falls in love with noblewoman Honoria Marable (Mia Threapleton). Fans loved watching the queer storyline between the two women, but the show didn’t go far enough and their plot line was not given nearly enough screen time.
Hopefully, showing queer women in the trailer means that that’s going to change in season two an we’ll be gifted more developed queer characters who get just as much screen time as the straight romances do.
Season two of The Buccaneers premieres on June 18, 2025, on Apple TV+. Watch the full trailer below.
